Day 17/17: Tuesday, January 21, 2020: Rio de Janeiro

We are not expected to arrive in Rio until mid-afternoon. So, we have a leisurely morning.

Rio was first discovered by a Portuguese expedition under explorer Gaspar de Lemos, captain of a ship in Pedro Álvares Cabral's fleet in January of 1502. Thinking it was the mouth of a river and not a huge bay, it was name River of January or Rio de Janeiro. Actually, the city is located at the mouth of the huge Guanabara Bay, the second largest bay in Brazil. The largest bay is at Salvador. 

The city was founded in 1565 by the Portuguese.







As we approached Rio, we went around the





As we neared the city, the outline of Sugarloaf Mountain was easily picked out. Named Sugarloaf because it resembled a lump of natural sugar common to the day.
